Focus: The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope isn’t just another telescope. It’s NASA’s next move to see the universe in a way we never have before.

Roman takes the same size mirror as Hubble, but gives us a window 100 times wider. That means it can map huge parts of the sky, fast. From hunting for invisible _dark energy_ and _dark matter_, to finding thousands of new planets around other stars, including Earth-like ones.

The telescope is named for Dr. Nancy Grace Roman 1925–2018, NASA’s first Chief of Astronomy. They called her the _“Mother of Hubble”_ because she built NASA’s space astronomy program from scratch in the 1960s. She fought for Hubble, planned it, and made sure it flew. Without her, there is no Hubble… and no Roman.

It hasn’t launched yet, but the mission is already clear: answer the big questions. _What is the universe made of? How did galaxies grow? Are we alone?_

    Why Does Roman Matter?
Because it changes the game from “point and look” to “survey and discover.”
    1. Speed: It can cover in months what would take Hubble decades.
    2. Scale: It will create the biggest, sharpest maps of the infrared sky we’ve ever had.
    3. People: It’s named after a woman who proved you can build a whole field of science if you stay open and keep going.

    Bottom Line
Roman is NASA’s bet that the answers to our biggest questions are out there, and we just need a wider window to see them. And it carries the name of a woman who opened the door for all of us to look.

Africa can’t watch from the sidelines. The race to space is also a race to build STEM skills, local research, and young people who know their names belong in the cosmos.

_“My career was quite unusual, so my main advice to someone interested in a career similar to my own is to remain open to change and new opportunities.”_
    — Nancy Grace Roman
