1. Understanding the opportunity landscape

To get us to paint the reality on the ground. We welcome your input on these questions:

  1. Is informal trade a choice or necessity?
  2. What are Zimbabwean women in this corridor really earning vs risking?
  3. What would make participation in this corridor safer or more profitable?

Informal trade is largely a necessity driven by limited formal employment opportunities, though some women leverage it strategically for income and independence.
While earnings can sustain households, they are often unpredictable and outweighed by risks such as harassment, confiscation of goods, and currency volatility.
Safer and more profitable participation would require formalisation support, access to finance, fair border regulations, protection mechanisms, and better market information.
